Online Teacher Development
Provide high-quality, low-cost, easily accessible professional development for teachers and administrators in our region and statewide; supplement face-to-face, classroom-based teaching-learning model Description:
The preparation and credentialing of teachers, as well as the ongoing professional development requirements for teachers and educational administrators, are critical needs in the state of California. We need to be as broad and as flexible as we can with our educational and professional development offerings to meet the range of needs. The School of Education is committed to providing opportunities for basic and supplemental coursework on a regional and statewide basis without requiring full time on-site presence. This capacity has advantages of both decreasing costs for users, as travel is not required, and offering flexibility in terms of the time committed to accessing information, as teachers and educational administrators are working professionals with complex schedules.
The capacity for online teacher training and professional development would also provide opportunities for basic educational research into the impacts of new and creative teaching methodologies. Further, this enhanced capacity would promote the sustainability of teacher learning.
School of Education faculty and staff will develop innovative course content and professional development materials. The IT design team would develop the online internet-based vehicle, making the best use of the latest thinking in learning and teaching via distance learning technology. The infrastructure, including hardware, bandwidth and programming, would be developed to support these activities.
We fully expect benefits to accrue to our current students as future teacher leaders or school district or community college administrators.
There is the potential that, once established, the capacity for online teaching and professional development could be revenue generating.
