Webcasting

Need to be addressed:
Improve community outreach through the use of live and on-demand video over the Web

Description:
This is a proposal to develop Webcasting services for the campus. We are envisioning Webcasting services to include the recording of live events for simultaneous Webcasting and for on-demand replay over the Internet. This service could be used for public events as well as courses. The cost and availability of Webcasting services would depend on the video capture capabilities of the location, demand, and the quality of the technical production. The http://webcast.berkeley.edu provides an excellent example of the service that is being proposed for UC Davis (the Berkeley campus Webcast approximately 100 events last year, with 70,000 viewers).

University Communications would help ensure the campus's investment in Webcasting is put to the most effective use by determining which events would be suitable for Webcasting, based on audience demand and the potential value to the public and campus community members. University Communications would advise on optimal locations, set-up and types of presentations that would make the most effective Webcast, and would partner with IET to develop video and audio guidelines for camera operators to maintain visual and audio quality and ensure a highly professional product. It will be important to provide an adequate number of seats so that Web viewers aren't disappointed or discouraged from visiting our Web site again.
